How did Community Bible Study get started?

Community Bible Study began in the US in 1974 - a direct result of the prayers of a group of faithful people seeking an in-depth Bible study. God has continued to bless this ministry through the years and in 1985 the first Canadian class began in Toronto. Today over 1200 men, women, teens and children are attending weekly classes across Canada.

In 1992 Community Bible Study International was formed in an effort to fulfill many requests for Bible study materials in other languages. CBS International is present in 57 countries around the world with about 28,000 people in its groups. Community Bible Study Canada is a federal not-for-profit Canadian corporation and is associated with Community Bible Study International.

How is CBS financed?

The cost of operating the ministry is covered by a registration fee from the class members that is waived if they are unable to pay. As well, class members pay a small amount weekly at the class to cover the costs of the ministry. Some classes allow members to pay in full at the beginning of the class year. Additional ministry costs are covered by private donations. CBS is registered in Canada as a charity and issues receipts for income tax purposes. Everyone involved in leadership is a volunteer; only the 2 part-time office staff are paid.

Who writes CBS materials?

CBS Canada obtains all lessons from the ministry in the US which is responsible for all the writing and editing. Selected individuals write the lesson questions and application suggestions. Bible scholars are recruited to produce the commentary sections. CBS tries as much as possible to avoid denominational bias in its materials.
